Happy to help: the welfare effects of a nationwide micro-volunteering programme

London School of Economics and Political Science - 

This paper estimates the wellbeing benefits from volunteering for England’s NHS Volunteer Responders programme which was set up in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. It found that active volunteers report significantly higher life satisfaction, feelings of worthwhileness, social connectedness, and belonging to their local communities. A social welfare analysis shows that the benefits of the programme were at least 140 times greater than its costs.

How can we dismantle health inequity together? National Voices’ conference to realise the power of the voluntary sector

National Voices -
The How can we dismantle health inequity together? conference ran over four Tuesdays in March 2021, with each day focused on a different theme. The conference covered the voluntary sector’s role in responding to the unequal impact of Covid-19, explored opportunities for cross-sector working and identified influencing priorities, and looked at how to tell stories of health inequity that will be better heard by decision makers. This report aims to bring together learnings from the conference, as well as identify key themes.

Investigation into government funding to charities during the Covid-19 pandemic

National Audit Office (NAO) - 
In 2020, the government announced a £750 million financial support package for frontline charities. It designed the package as part of its response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It targeted its support at those organisations in the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector providing vital services to the vulnerable. This report explores the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport’s distribution and oversight of £513 million of the package. It considers how the Department allocated funds, how financial support could be accessed by the sector and where financial support was received.
