Regulating healthcare professionals, protecting the public: consultation response

Between 24 March and 16 June 2021, the government sought views on proposals to reform the regulation of healthcare professionals and to introduce statutory regulation for anaesthesia associates (AAs) and physician associates (PAs). In response to the feedback received and following an extended period of stakeholder engagement and policy development, the government has set out their finalised policy positions. These positions underpin the draft legislation that will give the General Medical Council the power to effectively regulate AAs and PAs and provide a template for subsequent regulatory legislative reforms.

Evaluation of government commitments made on the digitisation of the NHS

House of Commons Health and Social Care Committee - 

This report from an independent panel of experts has found the government is making inadequate progress on vital commitments to digitise the NHS. Government commitments evaluated by the panel include the delivery of integrated health and care records, the roll-out of the NHS app and ensuring a workforce had the necessary digital skills. Despite some encouraging progress, the panel found that key government commitments on workforce and the use of patient information were either not met or were not on track to be met. It found that overall progress towards improving the digital capabilities of the NHS was too slow, and often lacked support and funding.

Fixing the foundations: why it’s time to rethink how we support older people with health problems to stay well at home

Draft QNI field specific SPQ standards

Queen’s Nursing Institute - 

The QNI has published draft standards for six specialisms in community nursing and these are now available for public consultation. The Field Specific Standards are designed to underpin and support Specialist Practitioner Qualifications offered by Higher Education Institutions in the UK. The six draft standards apply to education and practice in: adult social care nursing; community children’s nursing; community mental health nursing; district nursing; general practice nursing; and inclusion health nursing. The standards are available for consultation until 7th March 2023.

This report draws upon the electronic staff record (ESR), the monthly payroll of all staff directly employed by NHS trusts, to describe the personal and employment characteristics of all trainee nursing associates (TNAs) and nursing associates (NAs) (T/NAs) employed by NHS trusts in England over time and how they compare to other staff groups.
