Creating a better care system: setting out key considerations for a reformed, sustainable health, wellbeing and care system of the future

Local Government Association (LGA) - 
This report, by Ernst and Young and commissioned by the LGA, is based on the sector's views and proposes the establishment of a £1.3 billion a year transformation fund until 2019/20 to develop a new health and social care system. Supported by a pooled health and social care budget, devolved powers for health, and reformed incentives, the fund should focus on keeping people independent and preventing complex and long-term conditions.

This report sets out the increasing contribution to society and the economy older people can make through empowered local government and challenges the commonly-held belief that an ageing population is a burden. Note for adult safeguarding boards on the Mental Health Crisis Concordat

Local Government Association (LGA) - 
The Mental Health Crisis Care Concordat is a national agreement between services and agencies involved in the care and support of people in crisis. It sets out how organisations will work together better to make sure that people get the help they need when they are having a mental health crisis. This note includes cases of good practice and a checklist which safeguarding adults boards can use to assess their progress with the local implementation of the concordat.

Openness and honesty when things go wrong: the professional duty of candour

Nursing and Midwifery Council - 
This guidance, produced in collaboration with the General Medical Council, sets out the standards expected of all doctors, nurses and midwives practising in the UK. It also aims to help patients understand what to expect from healthcare professionals.It also makes clear that professionals need to have the support of an open and honest working environment where they are able to learn from mistakes and feel comfortable reporting incidents that have led to harm.

These slides provide an introduction to the use of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in clinical and economic studies and outlines new developments in research around patient-reported measurements.

Obesity statistics

House of Commons Library - 
This briefing gives statistics on obesity for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland with international comparisons. Breakdowns by age, gender, local authority and deprivation are given where possible, and data for both adult and child obesity is covered. In addition to statistics on the prevalence of obesity, this briefing gives statistics on prescriptions of drugs for obesity, trends in bariatric surgery, and the detrimental effect of obesity on health.

What we know now 2014

Public Health England -
This report summarises the key findings of the network and its partners over the last year. Although much of the research has been published previously, this is the first time it has been brought together in one place. New findings show there is a growing understanding within the health sector of what is important to people at the end of life.
