The site aims to provide a single place where all information standards can be located, along with valuable supporting material, such as e-learning, implementation guidance and case studies. It also enables users of the site to become active participants in the development of standards, by providing the means to share material, draw on each others' experiences and engage in discussions about existing and potential future standards.

Beyond breaking point?

Royal College of Nursing (RCN) -
This report is based on a survey of over 2000 nursing staff and argues that patient care in the UK is being put at risk by staff cuts and excessive workloads, leading to unprecedented nurse stress and ill health. It also raises concerns about the working culture which is operating in the care system in the UK, both in hospitals and community care. It calls on employers to take urgent action to protect staff welfare and patient care as well as for the Health and Safety Executive to take enforcement action where employers are failing to meet the legal requirement to assess and manage the risk of work related stress.

Principles for health and social care reform

Society of Local Authority Chief Executives and Senior Managers (SOLACE) -
This report outlines the views of SOLACE members on the shape that health and social care reform should take going forward, outlining ten key principles which should underpin future reform. It places an emphasis on a move towards integrated care; shared commissioning; and shared management.

A National Health Service for patients

This paper proposes the creation of new Patient-led Commissioning Groups (PCGs) – these would be mutuals set up by non-profit membership organisations such as trade unions, friendly societies or cooperatives which would allow patients to take direct control of commissioning.

Commissioning through evaluation - invitation to specialist hospitals

NHS England -
NHS England is inviting specialist hospitals to take part in a new, innovative commissioning approach, aimed at increasing access to services or treatments which are not currently routinely funded by the NHS. The first treatment to benefit, as part of the Commissioning through Evaluation programme, will be Selective Internal Radiotherapy (SIRT), a form of radiotherapy which uses radioactive beads to treat cancerous tumours in the liver. NHS England is now ready to proceed with the selection of centres to provide SIRT, and is inviting expressions of interest from hospitals across England. The closing date for applications is 11th October 2013, with the first patients expected to be treated under the scheme from November.

Independent review of the Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners (MRCGP) examination

General Medical Council (GMC) -
This review was commissioned by the GMC in order to identify if there was any evidence of discrimination against International Medical Graduates or British Black and Minority Ethnic graduates in the MRCGP examination that is set by the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP). It found that while there are significant differences in pass rates between different groups of doctors, the way they are assessed in the CSA is not the cause of those differences.

Social care reform: funding care for the future

This note provides a brief history of the proposals to reform the system of adult social care, including information on the Coalition Government’s Caring for our future white paper and the accompanying progress report on funding reform published in July 2012. It also introduces the Government’s announcements made in early 2013 to introduce a cap on social care costs and a revised means test, effective from April 2016, and the Care Bill introduced in May 2013 to reform the social care system.

This report finds that people with serious mental illness die an average of 20 years earlier than the rest of the population, the majority from preventable causes. It calls on the Government to take immediate action.
