Following the introduction of a new contract for hospital consultants
in 2003, this report examines how far the expected benefits have been
realised. It also examines whether consultants are managed efficiently
and effectively in light of the financial challenges that the NHS faces.
In addition to this, the report evaluates the implementation of the
recommendations of the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee's
recommendations which were designed to improve the management of
consultants.
